A mosaic out of music notes, made from one of my photos in the Pathway Project [link]

Okay, I know there're many many programs that will create a mosaic out of just about any image. But does anybody know of one that'll create a mosaic out of vector images? Lots of vector images? And do so in a way that the vector images fit very closely together? Because everything I've seen will take your many many little images and put them inside a box, and fit all the boxes together, they won't make the mosaic like a jigsaw puzzle, with everything snugged up to each other. Because that's what I'm looking for, and couldn't find, and ended up doing this manually. AND IT WAS A GIANT PAIN. And still didn't turn out like I wanted, because as closely as they're all fit together, they need to be MUCH closer to make a good picture.

I might go back and add more notes in later. Right now I'm all done. Why? GIANT PAIN.

As for why I even started it, I don't know, I've had a music thing going on in my head for a while now, I've played the violin since about third grade, and I still think musical notation is awfully pretty, when you get down to it. It's like Chinese or Hebrew letters, it's pretty even if you don't know what's going on. I'm working on a poster for a gala our orchestra's putting on, and this project kinda spilled out from that.

(Geek Note: it's made from 88 different colors. Because there's 88 keys on a piano. I know, I play violin, but there's only four strings on a violin, 8 notes in a scale, and about 60 chromatic notes possible on a violin if you're very VERY good, and none of those gave me enough colors. Piano keys it is.)

That? Is fascinating! I can't even imagine how you went about doing this. Trust a graphic designer/concert violinist to come up with this kind of image.
