Sea Changes Sky

Vector drawing done for the "Pen Tool Creative Contest" over at #VectorGallery. (I sure hope they're going by West Coast time for the deadline, 'cause I'm barely making it in at that...)

The contest organizers provided two pieces of stock art, entries had to use at least one of those pieces in their submission. I chose the one by which you can find here: fav.me/d2wbo12

I definitely used a Laurel Burch style on this one. I know her stuff is a little over-sold, found on cards and puzzles and way-overpriced bags in just about every gift shop you can imagine. But I don't care, I love that style. Don't own a single thing by her, but I love to look at the cards.

The title comes from the quote Elandria used in the description on her stock photo, "caelum non animum mutant qui trans mare currunt," which (really) roughly translates to "those who hurry cross the sea change the sky, not their souls or state of mind." And that kind of suggested the whole picture. I'm fairly sure she's a mermaid you know.

Adobe Illustrator CS3. Pen tool, with fills and gradients. No effects or rasterization, only vector art.
