Masking Tape Collage Bottles 2

Description

Back in junior high the kinda-strange-but-perfectly-harmless-and-shockingly-talented (dude hit a playing card from across the room with a BLOW DART GUN, no lie, saw it happen) art teacher (hi Mr. Watkins!) mentioned this technique:

Take a glass bottle. Cover it in little strips of masking tape. Then cover it in shoe polish, and what you get looks kind of like clay and kind of like leather.

(He actually said wood stain instead of shoe polish, but I tried it, and it didn't soak into the tape very well, some googling found the shoe polish suggestion.)

I'd never tried it 'til now, and I added a couple more things to it: layering in random pieces of text, and covering the whole thing with two coats of shellac.

For the random bits I've used old sheet music, pages from a Japanese fashion magazine, and a map of North Carolina. And on the flower vase I drew some swoopy bits with a gold pen. Just 'cause I like swoopys.

What's interesting is when you first put the shoe polish on, it doesn't look like much, it's kinda messy and boring. But after it dries and you put on the shellac it's much prettier, and then I swear after a couple days the paper must soak up some of the polish or something, the whole thing changes color.

They're a LOT of fun to make.

Thought I should share: we still have the one you made for us (with bits of maps). Miss Starbuck knocked it down a few times, and I only just recently noticed that the glass in the base had been completely pulverized. I had to pour out a little drift of glass shards. And the whole thing still looks perfect. You can't even tell unless you squeeze the part where the glass is now gone; all the tape holds the whole thing upright and solid. So if anyone asks, yes, they're breakable, and no, it won't make a difference :)
